Ingredients of Muffins vs Cupcakes

Muffins average around 2-3 cups of flower to 1 cup of sugar whereas cupcakes have 1.5 cups of flower to 1 cup of sugar. That’s why cupcakes are mostly sweeter and preferred by most people.

Cupcakes have more egg yoks and butter in the batter making them richer and fluffier than muffins.

Cupcakes are usually topped with icing or butter cream frosting whereas muffins usually don’t. Although, you might come across some muffins with a sugary glaze.

Mixing method

This is the biggest and most relevant difference between muffins and cupcakes.

Muffins

To make muffins, the dry ingredients are mixed and then added to the wet ingredients. After stirring for a little bit, you’ll get a thick batter which is why they are usually moist and dense.

Cupcakes

Cupcakes call for creaming softened butter and sugar together to incorporate air and get a fluffier crumb. You would add the eggs and then alternate adding the wet and dry ingredients. You’ll end up with a fluffy batter that has a silky, smooth texture. This is what gives cupcakes their soft, spongy texture.

Muffins on the other hand can be savory such as cornbread muffins. This makes them a breakfast / lunch food enjoyed by a lot of people.
